But what does hot filling actually mean – and why is it indispensable for many products in the cosmetics industry?
This is how hot filling works:
Hot filling is a process in which the cosmetic mass is heated and directly filled into its packaging while in a liquid state. These are typically formulations that are solid at room temperature but become liquid or pasty when heated – making them ideal for solid deodorants, lip care, or solid lotions.
Sounds technical? It is – but here’s a quick look behind the scenes:
- Heating: The finished cosmetic mass – for example, based on plant waxes, butters, and oils – is carefully heated to a specific temperature, ensuring it becomes evenly liquid.
- Homogenizing: During the heating process, the mass is continuously stirred to ensure an even consistency and optimal distribution of all ingredients.
- Filling: The liquid mass is directly and precisely filled into prepared packaging, such as stick forms or push-up paper tubes. The temperature and speed of the filling process are carefully coordinated to ensure quality and accuracy in filling.
- Cooling and solidifying: After filling, the products cool under controlled conditions and take on their solid final form – ready for sale. A bit of chilling, so to speak – just without the lounge chair 😊
