Think Inside the Box: The Path to Perfect Packaging

The packaging of a product is much more than just a shell – it conveys brand values, protects the product, and influences the customers’ purchasing decision. Sounds simple? It’s not! Developing new packaging can be nerve-wracking, occasionally cause some gray hairs, and definitely requires patience 😊.

With our own brand INUANA, we went through this process intensively – with ups and downs, and moments when we would have gladly thrown the packaging out of the window. Luckily, we had Ebro Color as a partner by our side, who not only impressed with technical expertise but also supported us actively during the tricky phases. Now, we want to give you insights into the development of the packaging – from the first idea to the final result.

1. The Idea and Concept: What should the packaging achieve?

The first step is to set clear goals:
• What values should the packaging convey?
• Which materials are suitable?
• How sustainable should the packaging be?
• How can it enhance the product experience?
At INUANA, it was clear from the start that we wanted to develop sustainable packaging that also feels premium and conveys our brand image.

2. Material Selection: Function Meets Sustainability

The choice of the right material is crucial for the design, feel, and environmental friendliness of the packaging. The following criteria play a role:
• Sustainability: Is the material recyclable or biodegradable?
• Protective function: Does it protect the product optimally from external influences?
• Printing and finishing capability: How can logos, colors, and surface textures be applied?

3. Design & Branding: The Packaging as a Brand Ambassador

An appealing design is essential, as the packaging is often the first thing customers notice. Key aspects include:
• Colors & Typography: How can brand colors and fonts be optimally used?
• Finishing: Embossing, coatings, or special printing techniques can enhance the design.
• Functionality: Is the packaging easy to open and reseal?
Together with our design team and Ebro Color, we developed various layouts and prototypes until we found the perfect combination of aesthetics and functionality.

4. Printing Process & Finishing: Precision is Key

High-quality printing ensures a professional appearance. Several points must be considered:
• Print data: It must be high resolution and in the correct color mode (CMYK).
• Proof print: Only with a physical sample can the quality be truly assessed.
• Finishing techniques: UV coating, hot foil stamping, or soft-touch coating add a special touch to the packaging.
A key decision was whether the folding box would be printed directly or if labels would be used.
Thanks to the expertise of Ebro Color, we were able to ensure that the final product exactly matched our expectations – after a few rounds of revisions, deep sighs, and sweat-inducing decisions, of course.

5. Production & Further Processing: From the Print Sheet to the Final Packaging
After printing, several additional steps follow:

• Die-cutting & Folding: The cardboard must be precisely cut and shaped.
• Gluing & Assembling: If necessary, the packaging must be securely glued or assembled.
• Quality Control: Each print sheet is checked for color accuracy and print quality.
This production step determines the final quality of the packaging and ensures that all details have been implemented accurately.

6. Sustainability & Recycling: Taking Responsibility

From the very beginning, it was clear to us that our packaging had to be environmentally friendly. We focused on the following factors:
• Recyclability: All materials can be recycled.
• Local Production: By working with Ebro Color, we were able to avoid long transportation distances, thus reducing our carbon footprint.

Conclusion: Packaging Development Requires Precision and Partnership

The development of packaging is a multifaceted process that requires strategic planning, creativity, and technical know-how. With Ebro Color, we had a reliable partner by our side who accompanied us from the first idea to the final packaging – and who saved us from panic attacks more than once.
For INUANA, we created packaging that not only looks great but also meets our sustainability standards. This proves that thoughtful packaging design and environmental consciousness can go hand in hand – even if it’s sometimes really stressful.
